NEWS: SCS Carpets Exit. New owners put a stop to all flooring sales.

SCS Carpets

SCS has wound down the sale of flooring and carpets since it was bought by an Italian furniture retailer. The retailer, whose name stands for Sofa Carpet Specialist, has halted the sale of flooring online and removed the ranges from its stores (For more info see https://www.retail-week.com/home-and-diy/scs-has-stopped-selling-carpets/7046632.article ).

It is believed that under its new owner, Italian furniture giant Poltronesofà, the focus will be on furniture. Despite investment in the carpet division, which used to represent 8% of total sales, SCS had not gained any market share in the category. SCS were never known for having the cheapest carpets online, however their all in one store for all flooring and furniture provided consumers with convenience. Another reason at the lack of growth could be the increase in Online Carpet Shops, who often can provide more affordable carpets online for those that want cheap carpets, however that could also be said for furniture. With the carpet stores like Carpetright now closed (See https://www.carpets-online.co.uk/blog/news-carpetright-administration) and now the exit of SCS from the flooring business, customers have far less choice of seeing their carpet ranges at large retail outlets. This will also hit carpet suppliers due to SCS and Carpetright being one of their largest customers.

SCS supplied the same carpets as other vendors, including online independents like ourselves at www.carpets-online.co.uk. However, they created their own names. For example, we provide the Olympia range https://www.carpets-online.co.uk/search?q=olympia , which is from the same supplier. SCS had priced the Olympia carpet at £33.99 per sqm, while our price is £14.99 per sqm. The price difference can be attributed to the higher overheads of a physical store in a prime retail location compared to a purely online carpet shop. An online carpet shop has different costs compared to a physical branch, such as SCS and the now-closed Carpetright. Carpets Online has to spend money on online advertising to become known and attract customers. Another difference in our case is that we offer carpets delivered to your door. We keep it simple by not including installation, as we know that customers want the choice. Where customers want carpets delivered and fitted, we recommend finding a local fitter or joiner through the site https://nicfltd.org.uk/.

With SCS no longer selling carpets and Carpetright going into administration, this is a nervous time for carpet and flooring manufacturers and suppliers. However, there has also been an increase in the number of online shops, which follows the consumer trend of online shopping. Physical shops have been in decline, with closures mainly affecting independent retailers. Tapi are now one of the largest flooring retailers and have acquired some of the Carpetright carpet stores and carpet warehouse distribution centres. They have also bought the carpetright naming rights and website.

SCS will continue to provide sofas and other furniture. Now the big question is, will they rename the company, as the "C" in SCS stands for carpets?

Did you know we stock some of the SCS ranges, for example:

https://www.carpets-online.co.uk/product/olympia-cream

For Carpetright here are just a couple:

https://www.carpets-online.co.uk/search?q=tennessee

If you were looking at a SCS carpet or a carpetright range and can no longer get it, contact us at hello@carpets-online.co.uk  and we will try to match it or provide an alternative, one thing we are confident of is that we do cheaper carpets than the main retailers out there. Carpets-Online can provide these competitive prices as we do not have overheads of carpet stores, we run from a couple of warehouses and an office, this keeps our costs centralised and low which allows us to provide affordable carpets to our customers. We pride ourselves with having some of the cheapest carpets online in the UK, so check out our online carpet store and see some fantastic deals.
